Degenerative Lumbar   Spinal Stenosis
Patient and family Information: Degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Degenerative Lumbar Spinal stenosis is the common affliction of the spinal column, it is the degenerative process, which affects the persons when they become aging. The number of the population with over 60 years old is increasing up to 9-10% in Thailand, occurs almost every country in the world. We have established clinical practice guideline to provide excellent care to the patient. The information in this web page will inform the readers understand their back condition. If you understand well and follow the instructions in this webpage you will have a healthy back ....More detail...

Chaophya Hospital, in collaboration with a leading biotechnology firm, TheraVitae, is now
offerring state-of-the-art cell therapy for end-stage ischemic heart patients for the first time
in Asia. Using autologous cell therapy, circulating adult stemcells harvested from the patient's own blood, the cells are separated from other blood cells and greatly expanded in
number in the laboratory using GMP manufacturing standards.
Approximately one week later these cells, called angiogenic progenitor cells or APC's for
short, are re-infused back into the blood vessels supplying blood flow to the heart muscle.
The injected cells migrate out of the blood vessel's lumen and take hold in the ischemic muscle region where they stimulate the formation of new blood vessels to bring more blood flow to the needy heart muscle fibers.
In addition to being precursor cells for blood vessels, some of the APC's are known to also morph into cardiac muscle cells, fuse with heart muscle fibers and seecrete cytokines, molecules that provide the homing signals to recruit other cells and molecules to help rejuvenate the function of heart muscle. In this case, the APC's transfused are expected to turn into or stimulate the formation of new blood vessels.

The advent of this new millennium will be recognized as the dawn of the age of regenerative medicine, another milestone and major advance in the illustrious history of medicine. The Holy Grail of cell biologists and medical researchers will be the growing of entire organ for replacement of diseased counterpart, much like using spare parts for repairing a car. The day when that can be routinely achieved is probably far in the future; but fortunately today we already have the know-how to grow a crucial basic building block for an entire organ, that is the growing of blood vessels which bring indispensable nutrients and oxygen to tissue and organs in the body.
In collaboration with a leading biotechnology firm, Theravitae Co. Ltd. (www.theravitae.com) , Chaophya Hospital is now offering state-of-the-art cell therapy for end-stage ischemic heart patients for the first time in Asia . Using circulating adult stem cells harvested from your own blood, the cells are separated from other blood cells and greatly expanded in number in the laboratory using GMP manufacturing standard. The injected cells migrate out of the blood vessel's lumen and take hold in the ischemic muscle region where they stimulate the formation of new blood vessels to bring more blood flow to the neey heart muscle fibers. In addition to being precursor cells for blood vessels, some of the APC's are known to also morph into cardiac muscle cells, fuse with heart muscle fibers and secrete cytokines, molecules that provide the homing signals to recruit other cells and molecules to help rejuvenate the function of heart muscle. The beneficial effect becomes clinically discernable usually after one month and becomes maximal at 3-6 months.

Adult Stem Cell Therapy Treatment Offers New Lease on Life for End-Stage Ischemic Heart Disease Patients
May 3, 2007 – Ischemic heart disease, and specifically coronary artery disease (CAD), is the leading killer of both men and women in the US today. Over 110 CAD patients from America now have a new lease on life, thanks to the pioneering efforts of one of Asia’s leading cardiologists, Dr. Suphachai Chaithraphan, Chairman of the Executive Board of Chaophya (pronounced chow-pea-uh) Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, and Director of its Cardiac Center.

US Heart Patients Being Treated with Adult Stem Cells in Thailand
In Thailand, Chaophya Hospital is now treating no-option heart disease patients from abroad with adult stem cell therapy developed by TheraVitae Ltd. Dr. Amit Patel M.D., Director of Cardiac Stem Cell Therapies at The McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is also using TheraVitae's technology. Dr. Patel, who was in Bangkok training cardiac surgeons, explained his implantation techniques.
